Your tour begins with a 30-minute drive to Fort Stevens where you will enjoy an informative "Behind the Scenes" look at this historic fort.
Once you arrive at Fort Stevens, you will be greeted by your guide and be taken through the history of the Fort. Over 140 years ago, young soldiers dressed in Union Blue and stood watch on earthwork fortifications over the entrance to the Columbia River. Today, you can marvel at a similar view from the reconstructed Civil War earthen works.
Fort Stevens enjoys the distinctions of being the only military installation in the continental United States to be fired upon since the War of 1812. Your guide will tell you the story of the night of June 21, 1942 when the fort was the target of a Japanese Submarine that fired 12 shells towards the Fort. The fort served for 84 years, beginning with the Civil War and closing at the end of World War II. Fort Stevens today has grown into a 3,700-acre park that offers visitors the chance to explore a piece of American history and enjoy the park's nature and recreational opportunities.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of moderate walking and some areas of the fort are only accessible by climbing numerous steps. It is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Casual, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable, flat walking shoes are suggested.
