Look for bears, deer and bald eagles in their natural habitats from an elevated observation area in the remote Spasski River Valley.

Departing the pier, you fill first head through Hoonah, Alaska's largest Tlingit Indian settlement. Before long, you will be deep in the bush country approaching the Spasski River Valley. During the drive, your guide will enlighten you with stories about the Tlingit Indians, the engrossing history of Hoonah and its surrounds, and the best ways to catch a glimpse of the bountiful wildlife in the valley.

Once you arrive in the heart of the Spasski River Valley, you will walk about 800 yards along a gravel path and boardwalk to the elevated viewing platform. During your time here, be on the lookout for the diverse wildlife that makes its home here, including grizzly bears. While this is an excellent area to observe animals, they roam freely, so there are no guarantees that you will catch sight of them.

However, the Alaska coastal brown bear is only one of the many creatures that live in the Spasski River Valley. They are highly intelligent omnivores that primarily eat vegetation. The Sitka black-tail deer is another native that may be spotted from the observation area, as well as land otters, mink and marten. And don't forget to look skyward for bald eagles, a highly efficient bird of prey that frequents the valley.

After approximately 1-hour at the viewing area, you will walk back to your bus and transfer back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes limited walking; however, some of it is over gravel surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Flat, comfortable walking shoes; warm layered clothing and waterproof outerwear is suggested as you may be exposed to the elements. During the tour you will be in wilderness areas that are not fenced and the wildlife is not in captivity; therefore, wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. The road to the Spasski River site is an unpaved remote road that will be bumpy. Don't forget your camera and binoculars.
