Kowloon means "Nine Dragons," referring to the Chinese belief that nine dragons lie under the surrounding hills, forming the backbone of the region sandwiched between Victoria Harbor and the New Territories. This half-day tour is an introduction to the New Territories, the area north of the Kowloon Peninsula that separates Hong Kong from the Chinese frontier. Drive through what was once a lush rural landscape, now under rapid development and change. See new towns of concrete high-rise buildings, bringing dramatic transformation to the once tranquil terrain. The first stop is Tai Po with a visit to the age-old rural market selling an amazing variety of fresh produce, herbs, seafood, dried goods and daily household necessities. In Tai Po, discover the roots of ancient beliefs at the impressive Man Mo Temple, built in 1891 and dedicated to the gods of Man (literature) and Mo (military). Re-boarding the coach, drive to Wong Tai Sin Temple, built in 1973, and the most celebrated Taoist temple in Hong Kong. Dedicated to a mythical shepherd who had the power of healing, the temple is an excellent example of traditional Chinese architecture, with bright red pillars, a golden roof adorned with blue friezes, yellow latticework and multi-colored carvings. Return to Kowloon with visit to the fragrant 'Flower Market' - the centre of HK's wholesale and retail floral business. Specialist shops and sidewalk displays showcase exotic blooms and plants from all over the world, as well as from Hong Kong's New Territories. Last but not the least is the Jade Market full of stalls selling jade piece of all kinds.
