This full-day tour takes to Chiran, an out-lying castle town best known for its well-preserved samurai street, and the Satsuma Peninsula, known for its hot springs, sub-tropical flora, stunning beaches, and dramatic rocky coastlines.

Departing the pier in Kagoshima, drive south to Chiran to see the historic samurai dwellings and gardens clustered along a picturesque road nicknamed Samurai Lane. Commissioned by local samurai as ways to embellish their modest estates, the gardens were masterpieces in "borrowed landscaping" techniques, where the garden design incorporates the surrounding scenery. During your time in Chiran, youll also visit the memorable Tokko Heiwa Kaikan, or Peace Museum, dedicated to the young kamikaze pilots who trained near Chiran before embarking on suicide missions against Allied sea vessels in WWII. The museum commemorates the bravery and sad sacrifice of these young Japanese men, and makes a plea for world peace.

Following lunch served at a local restaurant in Kagoshima, you will make your way to Senganen, also called Iso Teien,Sengan-en, a serene Japanese-style landscape garden constructed in 1660. Offering exquisite views of the bay and volcano, the former summer villa of the powerful Shimazu clan includes artificial rivers and mountains, a bamboo grove, cascading waterfall and traditional poem-writing garden. You will also visit the Shoko Shuseikan Museum, Japan's first Western-style factory. Established by Lord Shimazu in 1852 to produce armaments, glass, ceramics and farm tools, it is now a museum detailing the 700-year Shimazu family history. Afterwards, you will re-board you coach and travel back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 4 hours of moderate walking with a limited number of steps to negotiate. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach, sit in a coach seat and have an able-bodied companion to assist. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate casual clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.
