Don't simply gaze upon the beauty of Queen Charlotte Sound, experience it up close and personal by walking its perimeter track. A lovely cruise boat takes you there and back.

Depart right from the pier aboard the motor launch Sounds Adventure, which will carry you at a leisurely pace well into Queen Charlotte Sound, past iconic Wedge Point and on to Mistletoe Bay. Along the way, the natural scenery is stunning and it only gets better as you disembark and join the Queen Charlotte Track.

This 45-mile walkway extends almost the entire length of Queen Charlotte Sound, and the portion around Mistletoe Bay is among the most picturesque. The mostly clay soil surface isn't terribly steep, which makes your walk all the more enjoyable. The track follows a network of pioneer-day bridle paths, which were originally traveled by the native Maori to easily access the waters for fishing.

During your guided walk, you may hear the fluting calls of the greenish bellbird and highly intelligent tui, a bird of the honeyeater family that can imitate human speech. You might pass towering rima trees, which were already mature when Captain Cook sheltered in the sound in the 1770s. Other areas are native bush, covered by nikau palms, a multitude of ferns and delicate flowering orchids. The flora and fauna are ever changing and always awe-inspiring. After a trek of nearly two hours through this marvelous natural setting, you'll re-board the Sounds Adventure and cruise back to the pier in Picton.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of moderate walking over some natural surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
