From port, Berlin lies to the southeast, a drive that is exceptionally scenic. Upon arriving in Germany's capital city, you will see one of its most poignant symbols, the restored Brandenburg Gate, which was once part of the Berlin Wall. Another icon is the Unter den linden, the fashionable avenue of aristocratic old Berlin, which extends from the Brandenburg Gate to Alexanderplatz, once the heart of socialist East Germany. Continuing on, you will stop at the East Side Gallery to contemplate a section of the Berlin Wall on which artists, both famous and obscure, were encouraged to express themselves in paint. Although Germany has been reunified for more than 15 years, many of the most noteworthy sites are reminders of its earlier divisiveness and war years. For instance, there is Checkpoint Charlie, a Cold War crossing point between East and West Berlin, the Tempelhof Airlift Memorial, and the Allied Museum, where the Allied presence in post-war Berlin comes alive. Following free time for lunch on your own, you will see attractions such as the Reichstag, which once again houses Germany's parliament, and the new Memorial for the Victims of War and Dictatorship.
Enjoy some free time before returning to your ship in Warnemuende.
