The imposing City Hall, known locally as Stadshuset, makes for an impressive introduction to Stockholm. Completed in 1923, this magnificent fortress-like building contains two courtyards and the several splendid halls, among them the Blue Hall, where the Nobel Prize Banquet is held. It's also renowned for the mosaics covering the walls of the Golden Hall. Continuing to the island of Djurgården, a park that has become Stockholm's premier outdoor recreation center, you will visit the fascinating Vasa Museum. Its centerpiece is the stunning Vasa, a 17th-century warship that is the world's oldest complete ship. Ironically, in 1628 it sunk to the bottom of the harbor on its maiden voyage, where it remained until being salvaged 333 years later. Following some free time in Old Town for lunch on your own, the walking portion of the tour begins at the Royal Palace. The 18th-century Italian-baroque residence has more than 600 rooms and took more than 60 years to complete. Be sure to notice the fine tapestries in the State Apartments. Later, you will enjoy the panorama of Stockholm's Old Town and surrounding islands from high atop Fjällgatan, a popular viewing area.
