This exclusive private tour takes you to Foulis Castle, which has been the private family home of the Chiefs of Clan Munro for over 700 years.
A 30-minute coach ride from Invergordon brings you to Foulis Castle where you are met and entertained by Hector Munro of Foulis - the 33rd hereditary Clan Chief. Accompanied by the Clan Chief and his charming mother, Mrs. Eleanor Munro of Foulis, you'll commence a tour of this stately residence. During this unique experience, you'll learn about the area, its history, culture and natural environment along with hearing fascinating stories of a typical Scottish clan - the Munros or Munroes. Interestingly, one of the most famous Monroe clansmen was James Monroe, 5th President of the United States.
Once a fortified tower, Foulis castle was burned in suspicious circumstances at the time of the 1745 Risings, shortly after the battle of Culloden in 1746. The present castle, set in beautiful grounds amongst mature trees and built on the remains of the old defensive keep, dates mainly from the 18th century. While here, you'll view the fine reception rooms, fascinating Clan memorabilia and pictures, a display of old Clan tartans, and an early Victorian kitchen with its original fittings. The surroundings are enhanced with superb views of the sea across waving cornfields. Outside, you'll see the fine courtyard gardens and the highland cattle grazing in the adjoining parkland.
Before returning to Invergordon, your tour of this authentic home is followed by tea and refreshments taken with The Chief and his mother in the Castle dining room, surrounded by portraits of their ancestors. No doubt you'll hear how The Chief is a renowned grower of malt barley, the essential ingredient of Scotland's famous malt whiskies, while his mother is known as an expert gardener.
