Discover Germany’s rich maritime history at a waterfront museum containing hundreds of important maritime objects, including rare historical ships.

Depart from the pier and enjoy a short drive to the German Maritime Museum in the center of Bremerhaven, a city founded in 1827 where the Weser River empties into the North Sea. Over the years, seafaring activities such as shipbuilding, shipping and fishing naturally fueled the city’s growth, and today Bremerhaven is the largest German port on the North Sea.

Much of that history is preserved in the German Maritime Museum, a wonderful repository of vintage ships and maritime objects. As you browse the exhibitions, you will gain a deeper appreciation of Germany’s significant, long-standing relationship with the sea and how it has helped to shape the country. Highlights include the remains of a Hanseatic cog, which is estimated to have been built in 1380. Single-mast wooden cogs were among the most prevalent merchant ships used in medieval Europe.

You will also have the opportunity to tour the interior of the “Seute Deern,” the world’s largest wooden cargo sailing ship, which is docked just outside the museum. The ship isn’t just a magnificent vessel; it doubles as a restaurant. During free time, you might explore further or shop at the nearby Mediterraneo Shopping Center before driving back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of moderate walking/standing plus any additional walking at the guests’ discretion during free time. There are uneven and cobblestone streets in the city center. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability and may make arrangements with the guide to not participate in some of the guided walking portions of the tour. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Guests should be prepared for the possibility of rain.
