Explore Bremerhaven on your own, including areas with marquee attractions such as the popular city center, the Mediterraneo shopping center, and the historic fishing port.
Transfer from the pier to the city center where you’ll enjoy free time to visit the attractions you find most appealing. This section of Bremerhaven is a hub for museums and cultural centers that you can explore at your own pace. There’s the German Maritime Museum, a repository of maritime objects and vintage ships that include the remains of a Hanseatic cog, which was used as a merchant ship in medieval Europe.
Or you may prefer the German Emigration Center, a museum that tells the compelling story of the more than 7 million emigrants who sailed for the New World from Bremerhaven. If your interest lies in shopping, the Mediterraneo shopping center boasts dozens of upscale boutiques and restaurants in an atmosphere that emulates a mini city. Or simply relax and soak in the local atmosphere by strolling along the promenade that follows the Bremerhaven dike. What you do is entirely up to you.
After approximately 90-minutes in the city center, you’ll rejoin your coach for the short drive to Bremerhaven’s fishing port where you’ll have some additional free time. In one area, you can see several historical ships that have been retired from service, including a trawler and an icebreaker. The high-tech, modern side of the port is represented in the commercial section, where millions of shipping containers and automobiles are handled each year. Following your visit, you’ll re-board your coach and return to the cruise ship pier.
Please note: Walking on this tour is solely at the guests’ discretion during free time. There are a few steps to negotiate as well as uneven and cobblestone streets in the city center. At the fishing port, there are several steps required to reach the top of the outlook; however, guests may elect to wait in the coach. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Guests should be prepared for the possibility of rain.
