Germany has more than 1,200 breweries, but few as internationally known as the Beck’s Brewery, which you’ll explore in-depth before enjoying free time in historical Bremen.
Your one-hour drive to Bremen commences with a drive south that somewhat parallels the Weser River, which connects Bremerhaven and Bremen. Founded by Charlemagne in 787 A.D., Bremen has a storied history, although one of the city’s highest-profile icons wasn’t created until 1873, the year the Beck’s brewery opened.
While still brewed locally, Beck’s beer is enjoyed globally and has grown to become Germany’s best-selling beer. Its familiar green bottle and logo containing a key (which mirrors Bremen’s coat of arms) are now known in more than 90 countries worldwide.
As you tour the famed brewery, you’ll discover the art of brewing and exactly how the various Beck’s and lower-alcohol Haake-Beck brands are made. Afterwards, you’ll be invited to a beer tasting before continuing your tour of Bremen.
During your one-hour guided walk through Bremen’s city center, you’ll pass architectural icons such as the town hall. It’s a magnificent World Heritage site, as is the nearby 600-year-old statue of Roland, Charlemagne’s favorite nephew, who died in battle and became a symbol of freedom and justice. Other highlights include the beautifully restored Bremen Cathedral, the historical market square and the Böttcherstrasse, an alleyway of arts and crafts shops. Following your walking tour, you’ll rejoin your coach and make the one-hour drive back to the pier in Bremerhaven.
Please note: This tour includes over 3 hours of moderate walking/standing. There are some steps to negotiate at the brewery as well as uneven and cobblestone streets in the city center. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; and sunglasses are recommended. Flat, sturdy, walking shoes are required for the brewery. Guests should be prepared for the possibility of rain. The travel time to Bremen is approximately 1-hour in each direction.
