Indulge your senses with the historic sites and unique flavors of Scandinavia during this tour of scenic Gothenburg, and lunch at the Michelin-rated Sjömagasinet.
Depart the pier for the drive to Gothenburg, founded in 1621 after King Gustav II ordered a strong fortress built to secure Sweden's only western port against Danish raids. Gothenburg rapidly grew into a trading and maritime city, and the East India Company became Sweden's first international trading company during the 18th century. Luxury items that include silk, tea, spices and porcelain were imported to Sweden from countries such as China, despite journeys often lasting more than a year.
During your tour, you will cross the Alvsborg Bridge to Klippan for splendid views of the Archipelago and Alvsborg Bridge, then visit the Masthuggs Church for spectacular vistas of the city and port. From here, you will continue on to the Botanical Gardens. During your brief visit, you will see the lovely rock garden and rhododendron valley inside this beautifully arranged park setting. Next, you will proceed to the city center and Götaplatsen; the cultural hub of Gothenburg. Götaplatsen is flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts, Concert Hall, Municipal Theater and Library. The Poseidon Fountain, an imposing sculpture by Carl Milles, dominates the square. Your drive will then continue along Avenyn, Gothenburg's loveliest and busiest street, en route to Gustav Adolfs Torg, which was named after the city's founder. Here, you will find City Hall, the Courthouse and Stock Exchange.
Following a stop at Gothenburg's legendary 19th-century Fish Church, or Feskekôrka, your tour will feature a lunch at Sjömagasinet, a lovely restaurant located at the entrance to the harbor. The restaurant's history dates back to 1775, when the East Indian Trading Company used it as a warehouse. Sjömagasinet has received one star in the Michelin Guide since 1999, and its renowned Chef Leif Mannerström is among the most famous in Sweden. The three-course surprise menu will feature the local catch of the day.
After lunch, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the ship
