Settle into a dogsled on wheels and enjoy the ride as a team of powerful huskies pulls your sled through the lovely Adventdalen Valley.
After departing from the pier, you will drive to a husky farm lying on the outskirts of Longyearbyen. These intelligent, good-natured dogs love to run and are in their element pulling a dog sled. During this summer, when there’s no snow on the ground, the dogs mush across hard-packed dirt roads on wheeled sleds.
Following a short orientation at the husky farm, you will hop aboard one of the sleds and ride into the surrounding valleys. Each dog team has been carefully chosen to ensure that the animals are similar in size and gait. If the dogs were mismatched, the ride wouldn’t be nearly as smooth.
You might be surprised by the sheer power of the huskies as the team works as one, effortlessly pulling your wheeled sled through the Adventdalen Valley. Flanked by mountains on both sides, you will take in some of the most spectacular scenery in this part of Norway. While the terrain may look hauntingly austere and unforgiving, it’s home to the Arctic fox, an endangered species that makes dens in low mounds in the tundra. The valley also supports herds of reindeer, which forage on wild herbs, grasses and shrubs.
After spending well over two hours reveling in the sights, you will return by dog sled to the husky farm and then drive back to the pier.
Please note: This tour is considered strenuous and is not available to wheelchair guests, those with back problems, mobility concerns or pregnant women. Warm, layered clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, sturdy walking shoes are recommended.
