Enjoy an enlightening walk through Old Town, a wonderfully compact area of grand architecture wedged between the St. Lawrence River and Montreal's modern downtown.

A walk of just a few minutes from the pier takes you into the heart of Old Town, a once-walled area where Montreal was founded in 1642. As you stroll down the cobbled streets with your guide, you will see icons such as the Notre-Dame Basilica, Canada's first Gothic Revival-style church. When completed in 1829, it was the largest house of worship in North America, and it still commands attention.

That's the charm of this district; it's one spectacular building and key historic site after another. There's the 17th-century Place d'Armes, a square in front of the Notre-Dome Basilica where the French military once paraded, and the smaller but no less significant Place Royal, a meeting place that once served as Montreal's economic hub. You will also see the first courthouse from1856 and the city hall, built shortly afterwards but destroyed by fire in 1922. Although the inside was rebuilt, the exterior walls are original.

Over time, modern buildings have replaced ones with little historical value. The newest additions to Old Town include the Palais des Congrès convention center and the dazzling World Trade Center, which occupies a full city block. The latter is an architectural triumph of historical buildings linked by a glassed-covered promenade.

Your walking tour ends at the ship, although you may choose to remain in the Old Town and return later at your convenience.

Please note: This tour includes 3 hours of moderate walking. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
