Stroll the streets of Old Town, including lively Saint Laurent Blvd., sampling some of the local products that have influenced Montreal's cuisine, including tasty cheeses, maple-flavored delicacies, and exotic confections.
Depart from the pier for a brief drive to Délices de l'Erables, an award-winning shop devoted to products naturally sweetened with Canadian-made maple syrup, sugar or honey. The exact items you sample will depend on what's freshest, but they may include pastries, gelatos and jellies, all infused with maple flavoring.
The sampling will be just as varied at the Fairmount Bagel Factory, where you will nosh on some of the 20 varieties of bagels that include flax seed, sun-dried tomato and matzo bread. The bagels are hand-rolled, baked in a wood-fired oven, and absolutely delicious. It was in 1919 that bagels were introduced in Montreal and they have been popular ever since.
More snacks await you at the Marché Jean Talon, an authentic farmer's market with countless stalls and shops selling everything from garden-fresh herbs to exotic cheeses. Feel free to sample whatever the shopkeepers have put out for your enjoyment.
The nearby Maison du Cacao is just as generous with its handmade chocolates, as is Brisket Restaurant with its delicious smoked meats. Its specialty is marinated pig knuckles, but there is plenty more that will have you salivating. After your last tasting, you will return to the ship.
