This tour uses an accessible mini-coach equipped with a motorized wheelchair lift, and is designed for guests with mobility challenges to see the best sites of Saint John. This comprehensive city tour hits all the highlights of Saint John, including the historic Old City Market and the natural phenomenon of Reversing Falls Rapids.
Depart from the pier in an accessible mini-coach and head directly to Wollastook Park. From here, you'll enjoy a spectacular view of Saint John harbor and the historic city below. It's quite a sight, and a fine introduction to the area, where the Saint John River flows into the Bay of Fundy.
In fact, it's this confluence of waterways that creates the next attraction: Reversing Falls Rapids. You'll see it from the bluffs of Fallsview Park, where your guide will explain that twice daily the Bay of Fundy's tides rise faster than the river can empty. When this happens, the mighty tides force the river water upstream, causing the Saint John River to flow backwards. It's a strange sight that lasts for hours, until the tide goes out and the river height becomes higher than that in the bay.
Next, your guided tour continues on to the Old City Market, which was constructed in 1876 and narrowly escaped the devastating Fire of 1877. Canada's oldest continuously operating farmer's market, the Old City Market is filled with locally grown produce, bakery goods, crafts and other Canadian merchandise. Following your visit, you'll be driven back to the pier.
Please note: The Accessible Handi-Bus (with motorized lift) can accommodate up to 700 pounds (combined weight includes wheelchair), 32” wide, 72” tall and 60” long. This tour is geared specifically for wheelchair bound guests and their able-bodied companion(s). The stops include paved sidewalks, paved gravel surfaces and slight inclines; however, this is optional to the guests. Layered clothing and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. While the vehicle can only accommodate two wheelchairs, additional seats beyond those for the two companions can be purchased at the Destination Services Desk, subject to availability. Tidal activity at the Reversing Falls Rapids cannot be guaranteed.
