Travel back in time to 1744 and discover what life was like at Fortress Louisbourg, a re-creation of a French fort that is so impressive it has become a National Historic Site.

Departing from the pier, your tour begins with a 45-minute drive south across pristine Cape Breton Island that includes crossing over the Mira River which is the longest navigable river in Nova Scotia. In time, you will arrive at the Fortress of Louisbourg, a meticulous reconstruction of the 18th century fortress that once stood here. The original settlement was founded in 1713, and it thrived for decades as a center of fishing and trade until it was destroyed by the British in the 1760s. While there are many theories as to why the fortress failed, it's thought that it was a combination of superior British sea power and the Fort's weak defensive design on the inland side.

Upon arrival at the Fortress you will have an introduction and participate in a brief guided tour. You are then free to explore this fascinating historic site on your own, taking in the beauty of the exterior architecture of the buildings and visiting some of the exhibit buildings that will be open for your viewing pleasure.

Adding to the experience, there will be a trio of rotating workshops offering many opportunities to explore a place that time has forgotten. Rub shoulders with local characters, the De Gannes and the Chief Engineer's servants, as they provide a rare glimpse into the exciting challenges faced by the resilient residents of the 18th century town. Revel in the magnificence of the King's Bastion while you hear stirring tales of soldiers testing their mettle in an unfamiliar new environment. And for pure indulgence, treat yourself to the elegant bliss of our chocolate demonstrations, delighting in a first-hand experience making hot chocolate the "old fashioned" way.

The Fortress of Louisbourg offers quiet opportunities for visitors to imagine life in the toughest of conditions almost 300 years ago with beautiful visuals in static display as they stand on the Fort's history-laden grounds surrounded by the beauty of the architecture of the buildings, an ideal place within which to walk, reflect and ponder life long ago.

After spending approximately 90-minutes at the Fort, you will rejoin your coach and travel back to the pier in Sydney.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of moderate walking/standing, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. There are various gradients and surfaces to negotiate, including gravel. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Rain resistant layered clothing; sun cap; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
