Pre-Cruise Land Tours

PRE - Previewing Puerto Rico

PRE - Previewing Puerto Rico

Experience the natural side of Puerto Rico by hiking through gorgeous El Yunque rainforest and then enjoy San Juan’s urban charms with a tour that includes time on your own.

Day One:

When you arrive at San Juan International airport, you will be met inside the baggage claim area, assisted with your luggage and then driven to your hotel, La Concha – a Renaissance Resort characterized by its tropical and open décor, excellent lobby bar and casino, all of which face the ocean. The hotel is centrally located on Ashford Avenue, the main strip of the Condado, an area with many fine stores, restaurants and cafes within walking distance.

The remainder of the day is at leisure and dinner is on your own.

Day Two:

After breakfast at the hotel, you will meet in the lobby and then drive to El Yunque National Forest. If you plan on swimming at Mina waterfall, be sure to wear a swim suit underneath your clothing and bring a towel and water shoes.

El Yunque is a 3,500-foot peak within the national forest. Its name derives from the Indian word “Yuqui,” meaning “white land,” but the Spanish changed it to “Yunque,” which means “anvil,” as the peak resembles an anvil from some angles.

The rainforest covers 28,000 acres and contains 75% of the Puerto Rico’s virgin forests. The entire area is a bird sanctuary and the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. The abundance of rain here sustains more than 250 species of trees, 50 types of ferns and at least 20 varieties of wild orchids.

Many of the trees are estimated to be more than 1,000 years old. There is the Tabonuco forest with trees reaching heights in excess of 100 feet. The Colorado forest contains short, gnarled trees with hollowed trunks. Noted for their unusual root systems, Sierra Palms grow in abundance, as do huge tropical ferns that soar 40 feet in the air.

El Yunque is also home to a variety of indigenous wildlife, the most famous being the endangered Amazona Uttata or Puerto Rican Parrot and the Coquí frog, the national mascot. No more than an inch long, it gets his name from its cricket-like mating call: “Co-qui-i-i-i!” Although endemic to Puerto Rico, the frogs can be found in great numbers.

While touring the rainforest, you will stop for photos at La Coca Falls and another falls at the Yokahu Lookout Tower. If you’re feeling ambitious, a hike down to Las Minas Falls is offered. The hike is approximately 45 minutes downhill with a 55-minute return. Guests not wishing to hike can enjoy the visitor’s center during this time.

Then, after lunch at a beachfront restaurant, you will return to town and tour the older and newer sections. Traveling in air-conditioned comfort, you will see New San Juan’s Isla Verde area, Condado, Fort San Gerónimo and beautiful Old San Juan.

Your first stop is at Fort San Cristobal, from which the Spanish successfully defended San Juan from British and Dutch attacks, as well as frequent assaults from pirates. Be sure to see the centuries-old graffiti of Spanish galleons drawn on the dungeon walls.

Continuing on through the Old City, you will see elegant 17th-century Spanish ironwork on restored colonial homes and the streets’ blue-black glazed cobblestones that were brought to San Juan as ballast for Spanish galleons. You will also have time to explore the shops, boutiques and art galleries on your own before returning to the hotel.

The rest of the evening will be at leisure with dinner on your own.
