Watch master artisans make premium Dominican cigars at the world's largest hand-rolled cigar factory and then visit an artists' village where even more creativity is on display.
Within minutes of leaving the pier, your coach will arrive at the La Flor Dominicana cigar factory, where you'll witness each fascinating step of the time-honored process of making cigars, including the preparation and blending of the tobacco leaves, their rolling and aging, and the quality control methods that ensure superior products. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to purchase some well-known cigar brands.
Next, you'll drive to the lovely village of Altos de Chavón, atop a plateau overlooking the Chavón River. While it may look like a 16th century Mediterranean village, Altos de Chavón wasn't developed until 1976. It is an amazing re-creation, as you will discover walking the narrow cobbled streets. Among the highlights of this artists' village are the impressive St. Stanislaus Church and a Roman-style outdoor amphitheater that seats 5,000. However, not everything is an inspired re-creation. Inside the Regional Museum of Archaeology, you'll find thousands of pre-Columbian artifacts from indigenous tribes.
After your guided overview of the village, enjoy free time to explore on your own, among fine boutiques, galleries and craft shops. Rejoining your coach, you'll return to the pier, passing through the luxurious resort of Casa de Campo, a haven for the rich and famous.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of moderate walking, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time.
