Discover the joys of traditional Dominican life by touring the local sugar cane fields, a nursery of indigenous plants, and a hand-rolled cigar factory.
Depart from the pier in an open-air safari vehicle, designed for optimal viewing. Before long, the rural Dominican landscape will unfold, revealing its natural beauty. Arriving at a company-owned town where sugar workers live, known as a "batey," you'll learn how this vital crop is harvested and processed. You'll also have the chance to taste freshly cut sugar cane right from the field.
Continuing on, you'll enter an emerald-green rain forest that's home of the nicest Dominican Nursery Farm, producer of ornamental plants. More than 1,000 species are grown here, from the most common coconut palms to rare orchids. It's enthralling to wander through the nursery and behold the variety and beauty of the plants.
Cigars are another product synonymous with the Dominican Republic, and you'll see how they're produced at the La Flor Dominicana cigar factory, where you'll witness each fascinating step of the time-honored process of making cigars, including the preparation and blending of the tobacco leaves, their rolling and aging, and the quality control methods that ensure superior products. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to purchase some well-known cigar brands. By the time you return to the pier, you'll have a much greater understanding of everyday life in the Dominican Republic.
