Tour one of Belize’s most historical distilleries and sample some of its renowned products, followed by a folkloric performance that reveals the country’s rich heritage.
After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a brief driving tour of Belize’s former capital, an engaging blend of colonial and modern buildings. Along the way, the guide will entertain you with stories about the city’s intriguing history and Mayan heritage.
Belize has had a long relationship with rum dating back to the time of the buccaneers and even Rum Runners in the early 1920s. Local legend has it that Belize City was literally built on rum bottles and history tells of Belizean schooners making runs to the Louisiana coast during prohibition. Upon arriving at One Barrel Rum, you will tour a museum devoted to the locally made, sugar-based spirits. The museum contains plenty of artifacts that explain the distilling process in fascinating detail. You will also have the opportunity to visit the room where the rum is aged in charred oak casks for one year before being bottled.
A tasting follows, during which you may sample bold dark rums, lighter gold rums, and vintage rum with an even more distinct taste. One Barrel Rum also produces flavorful brandies and liqueurs such as Craboo Cream, a blend of Belizean eggnog and nanche, which is made from rum and grapes that are indigenous to Central America.
Following the tasting, you will watch a lively cultural performance at the distillery and then have some free time to browse the gift shop. The spirits that you have tasted will be available for purchase as well as items that reflect the local history and arts. Afterwards, while returning to the pier, you will see other noteworthy sections of Belize City from the comfort of your coach.
