Driving southwest with the beautiful Aegean Sea in the distance, you will soon arrive in the once rich and powerful, ancient city of Corinth. Excavations have revealed the city's massive size and resiliency for surviving numerous invasions and earthquakes. St. Paul lived and worked in Corinth for 18 months. The Bema platform, where the Roman governor tried Paul, is still visible. Similarly, seven of the original columns of the Temple of Apollo still stand. You can walk through the remains of the Market Place, a colonnaded square once surrounded by small shops. See the spring-fed Fountain of Priene, which has produced water since the earliest times, and the Lechaion Road, formerly the main thoroughfare to the port. Another marvel centuries in the making is nearby Corinth Canal, which cuts through miles of solid rock. It opened in the late 19th century, but the first attempt to build a canal on the site was in the 7th century B.C.
