This full day tour begins with a coach ride along the "Via del Sale", the road that starts from Trapani and travels to Marsala. This road has gained recognition because it passes through the fascinating salt pans of Trapani.
The Phoenicians were the first to understand the extremely favorable natural conditions that existed here for the extraction of salt. Today, the area has been declared a Natural Reserve by the World Wildlife Federation Fund. Due to the unique flora and fauna that grows here, the landscape is full of varied and vibrant colors. After a short guided tour, you will have some free time to view the reconstructed ancient wind millstone that was used for the production of salt and take some photos of the stunning scenery here.
From the salt pans, you will next travel to an olive oil farm that dates back to 1700. The farm is a beautiful old Sicilian family house filled with charm and tradition. Upon arrival, you will commence a guided walking tour that will allow you to observe how the extra virgin olive oil is made today, as well as how it was made back in earlier times. There are also examples of old Sicilian tools that were once used in the harvesting and processing of the oil. After your tour of the farm, you will see a demonstration of a typical Sicilian dish (local pasta or local dessert) that will be included with your meal. Following the demonstration will be the olive oil tasting. Your guide will explain how to taste the different types of extra virgin oil and how it is best paired with food. You will also have a chance to taste the local olives along with some local bread and cheese.
Before leaving the farm to return to the ship, you will be treated to a buffet lunch, topped off with an olive oil-flavored ice cream. During your lunch, relax and enjoy a performance of traditional Sicilian music. The combination of Sicilian food and music will truly allow you to absorb the essence of the real Sicily.
