Boarding your coach, you will embark on a scenic drive into Odessa's surrounding countryside, passing small villages, farms and gardens as you journey to the village of Nerubaiskoe. Originally established as a southern Cossack military settlement at the end of the 18th century, it is here where you will gain entrance to the impressive labyrinth of famed underground catacombs that stretch far beneath the local landscape. The catacombs were first made in order to provide the city of Odessa with lime stone for its buildings. Odessa and its surrounding environs are considered to have the largest network of underground tunnels in the world.
Escorted by your guide, you will take a fascinating walk into the catacombs and stop at the WWII command post that was used by the Soviet Army as part of the resistance effort. Before leaving Nerubaiskoe and heading back to the ship, you will also visit the local museum which includes among its many artifacts, a recreation of the WWII resistance headquarters.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 hour of walking, at times over uneven ground. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. It is not recommend for those who suffer from claustrophobia. The interior temperature of the catacombs is approximately 53 degrees Fahrenheit so a light sweater or jacket is recommended along with comfortable walking shoes.
