Etna for an enlightening wine tasting and cap off the day with lunch and a cooking demonstration at a famed local restaurant.
Meet your Bon Appétit Culinary Center Chef in the morning and begin your day with a drive from the pier through Giardini Naxos and on to seaside Catania. Sicilians are passionate about food, and there is no better place to experience that passion than Mercato del Pesce di Catania. This ancient street market is always a wonderful cacophony of exotic sights and sounds, with locals selling everything from blood oranges to cuttlefish. Watch tuna and swordfish being fabricated by the local fish mongers and sample aged sheep cheeses and cured meats. You'll stroll though the marketplace, with an orientation provided by the chef and an experienced culinary guide, purchasing ingredients for this afternoon's Sicilian cooking class.
After enjoying the market 'like a local', you'll walk a few blocks to a nearby family-owned patisserie to make cannoli, Sicilian-style. This classic dessert consists of tube-shaped, fried pastry dough filled with sweet, creamy ricotta cheese from sheep's milk. It's often flavored with chocolate chips, pistachios or candied fruits. Under the watchful eye of the Sicilian pastry chef, you'll create your own cannolis, learning how to get the consistency just right for the filling and the crispy shell. Of course, you may eat whatever you make. It's thought that cannolis were invented in Sicily in the 9th century when Arabs introduced sugar cane as a sweet substitute for honey.
Your tour continues with a scenic drive to the family-owned Benanti winery situated on the hills of Mt. Etna where you will sample some of their finest vintages and learn more about these 'trendy’ wines.
Next, you'll head to Nero d’ Avola, a local restaurant so famous it was featured on the new CNN travel channel program. Here, you’ll enjoy a cooking demonstration with some hands-on components as well as lunch is this enchanting and authentic Sicilian institution.
After an exquisite luncheon with local wines, you'll return to the ship.
