Your tour begins with a brief, picturesque drive from the ship into the historical heart of the city and Ovid Square. Here, seemingly standing watch over all of the local activities is a statue of the square's namesake, the Roman poet Ovid. Modern day Constanta is located on what was once the site of the ancient city of Tomis, founded in the 6th century B.C. For centuries, Tomis was a highly important commercial and cultural center during the Roman Empire and continuing into the early Byzantine period. Banished to Tomis in 8 A.D. by Augustus, the charms of the town were celebrated by Ovid in many of his subsequent poems.
Rising directly behind Ovid's statue is the imposing History Museum with its impressive collection of pieces from the Greek and Roman antiquity which includes statues, glassware, silver and coins. Directly adjacent to the museum, one of the largest known mosaics in Europe can be found. Nearly 2,000 years old, the mosaic was once an immense decorative pavement used by the Romans. Today, a substantial portion remains of the thousands of multi-hued tiles that comprise this beautiful and extraordinary piece of history.
Leaving Ovid Square, it's another short drive to the Folk Art Museum where an outstanding collection of traditional Romanian folk products and colorful costumes can be found on exhibit. A gift shop at the museum offers the opportunity to purchase some original handicrafts made by Romanian artisans.
Following your visit to the Folk Art Museum, you will travel to Eforie Nord, one of the most popular resorts on the Romanian Black Sea coast. Stopping at the Nunta Zamfirei (Zamfira's Wedding) Restuarant, you will be treated to a snack of local favorites accompanied by a glass of wine. For your enjoyment, you will be entertained with a delightful Romanian folk show, which depicts a typical Romanian wedding, with all of its traditions, while sipping Romanian wine.
At the conclusion of your visit at Nunta Zamfirei, you'll rejoin your coach for the leisurely drive back to the ship.
