Traveling along a scenic route that takes you through the rolling green hills of the Romanian countryside, you'll come to Adamclisi, site of the ancient Roman city of Tropaeum Traiani. From the 2nd to 6th centuries A.D., this once vibrant city was settled by war veterans, colonists and of course, members of the Roman Empire. Upon arrival, you'll begin a fascinating exploration of the ruins which include evidence of a canal system, towers, defensive walls and a mausoleum. Close by is an enormous monument - or Tropaeum, that truly dominates the surrounding landscape. Its construction was ordered by the emperor Tarjan at the scene of one of his bloodiest triumphs, and served as a lasting memorial to commemorate his victories against the Dacians during the first Roman-Dacian war in 101 A.D.

Leaving the site, you'll travel a short distance for a visit to the Tropaeum Trajani museum. Established in 1977, it houses limestone slabs depicting Roman legionary soldiers on parade and in combat, original sculptures, metopes and other valued architectural and archaeological artifacts from the city and surrounding area.

Before returning to the ship, a stop will also be made at the Folk Art Museum in Constanta. Here, an outstanding collection of traditional Romanian folk products and colorful costumes are on exhibit and a gift shop at the museum offers the opportunity to purchase some original handicrafts made by Romanian artisans.

Please note: Caps and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
