Your tour begins with a brief, picturesque drive from the ship into the historical heart of the city and Ovid Square. Here, seemingly standing watch over all of the local activities is a statue of the square's namesake, the Roman poet Ovid. Modern day Constanta is located on what was once the site of the ancient city of Tomis, founded in the 6th century B.C. For centuries, Tomis was a highly important commercial and cultural center during the Roman Empire and continuing into the early Byzantine period. Banished to Tomis in 8 A.D. by Augustus, the charms of the town were celebrated by Ovid in many of his subsequent poems.

Rising directly behind Ovid's statue is the imposing History Museum with its impressive collection of pieces from the Greek and Roman antiquity which includes statues, glassware, silver and coins. Directly adjacent to the museum, one of the largest known mosaics in Europe can be found. Nearly 2,000 years old, the mosaic was once an immense decorative pavement used by the Romans. Today, a substantial portion remains of the thousands of multi-hued tiles that comprise this beautiful and extraordinary piece of history.

Leaving the museum, a guided walk takes you past the largest mosque in Romania and on to St. Paul & Peter's Cathedral with its commanding tower. A visit inside the cathedral reveals wonderful marble columns, chandeliers, bronze candlesticks and marvelous fresco paintings of typical Romanian Orthodox icons.

Re-joining your coach, you'll head south, traveling alongside the vineyards of the Dobrudja. Blessed with one of the most suitable natural settings, Murfatlar vineyard is situated in the south-eastern part of Romania, between the Danube and the Black Sea. Nestled in the center of the Dobrudja plateau, this delightful vineyard stretches across a surface of more than 6,000 acres, encompassing several surrounding villages as well. Arriving at the wine cellar, you will be entertained with a lively local folkloric show and treated to a wine tasting of the celebrated wines of the Murfatlar vineyards.

After a relaxing visit, it's time to re-board your coach for the return trip to the ship.
