Traveling by foot from the pier, your local guide will lead you through the streets of this UNESCO World Heritage city to your first stop at the Church of St. Stephen, a church built in the 12th century, although some sources date it back as far as the end of the 10th century. This remarkably well-preserved medieval church has maintained most of its original form over the years and your tour includes an interior visit to this fascinating display of Nessebur's historical past. Along with the artistry of the colorful murals, and the amazing collection of iconostasis icons, it was in this basilica that decorative color ceramic was first used and you'll see examples of this throughout the church's interior design.
Proceeding on through narrow cobble-stoned streets, you'll experience first-hand the romantic atmosphere of this enchanting town with its colorful flower gardens and two-storied period houses, consisting of stone-built ground floors and wooden upper floors. Small town squares and quaint shops enhance this walking portion of your tour which includes exterior stops at several other prominent medieval churches, including the remains of the Old Metropolitan Church. It is widely believed that the central plaza located around this church was the site of the ancient agora, or Roman Market. Today, the spirit of the agora lives on with a profusion of sidewalk vendors offering up a wide array of art work and handicrafts.
Before leaving for the resort area of Sunny Beach, a final stop on the walking portion of your tour will be at the New Museum of Art and History where a significant collection of valuable artifacts is housed and the icon hall reveals a rich collection of wonderful icon paintings. From here, it's a short drive by coach to the resort mecca of Sunny Beach. Situated in the curve of a semi-circular bay, its wide beach, natural sand dunes and vast array of modern resort hotels, cafés, restaurants and clubs make this a popular tourist destination. An entertaining folkloric performance and some refreshments await you at one of Sunny Beach's theme-styled restaurants before your return to the ship.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 1/2 hours of walking - at times on uneven ground. There are also a considerable number of steps to be negotiated and it is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns.
