PRE - CHERISHED RELICS OF ROME

PRE - CHERISHED RELICS OF ROME

Marvel at the true icons of Rome, including the Vatican Museums, Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum and the gardens of the Pope’s summer residence.

DAY 1

Upon exiting the Customs area in the Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, you will be met and transferred to the Hotel Boscolo Exedra. Check in is at 2PM, and the rest of the day is yours to settle in at your leisure.

The hotel enjoys a prime location in Rome’s celebrated Piazza della Repubblica, providing easy access to an abundance of shops and restaurants.

DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will tour the Vatican Museums and Saint Peter’s Basilica. The museums contain some of the world’s greatest paintings and sculptures, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Caravaggio. Besides seeing the most well-known exhibits, you will also visit areas usually closed to the general public, including the tomb of Pope Pius XII and the Niccoline Chapel, which features gold that Columbus brought from the New World.

Note: When the Niccoline Chapel is not available, we will substitute with a visit to the “private room of the tears and the room of Pope’s vestments.

Next, you will drive to the Piazza Navona, a lovely square constructed in the 15th century and lined with cafes and Baroque palaces. Following lunch at one of the restaurants, you will walk to San Crispino’s near the famed Trevi Fountain for a cup of what is touted to be the best gelato in Rome.

Your afternoon is devoted to two more icons. First, you will be treated to an inside visit of the Colosseum, an enduring symbol of ancient Rome that once held 55,000 spectators. Afterwards, you will explore the treasures that lie beneath San Clemente Basilica, which include a 4th-century church, a 2nd-century pagan temple and a 1st-century house. The farther down you go, the more ancient the structures, until you reach the foundations which date from the Roman Republic.

In time, you will return to the Hotel Boscolo Exedra for dinner on your own and to spend another relaxing evening.

DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive southeast from Rome toward Lake Albano, where you will find Castel Gandolfo, the pope’s summer residence. Here you will be granted privileged access to the Vatican (Barberini Gardens). Here you can wander through the ruins of the Imperial Theatre and the Crypto-Portico – a covered passageway where the Emperor and his guests would stroll to escape the summer heat. Amongst the hidden treasures that can see are the Magnolia Garden, the Path of Roses, the Square of Holly Oaks and the aromatic herb garden. (note: an inside visit to the castle is no longer permissible).

Next you will visit the Chigi Palace in Ariccia. This ducal palace is a unique example of a baroque home which has remained virtually unchanged in its environment. It still contains its original furnishings and is a testament to the great wealth of one of the most important Italian papal lines: the Chigi Family.

Around midday, you will drive to a nearby farmhouse for a hearty lunch and an olive oil tasting. You will also learn also how to make pasta at the farmhouse. Afterwards, you will return to the hotel and enjoy an afternoon at your leisure.

The evening ends in style with a special Roman farewell dinner served at an extraordinary restaurant in the Via Veneto area near the hotel.

DAY 4

Following breakfast and check out at the hotel, you will transfer to the ship to begin your cruise.

POST - THE AMAZING ALPS

POST - THE AMAZING ALPS

It’s one highlight after another as you enjoy the architectural wonders of Austria’s storybook Salzburg, the rich history and creativity of Innsbruck, and the stunning scenery throughout the Alps.

NOTE: This program ends in Munich therefore departing flights should be booked out of the Munich International Airport (MUC).

Day 1

After disembarking the ship you will begin with a drive along the Autostrada passing the city of Trento and Bolzano before crossing the Austrian border. Here you will begin the journey into the spectacular Austrian Alps en route to Innsbruck.

Upon arrival in Innsbruck you will check in at your hotel and have free time for shopping and leisurely enjoying Innsbruck’s lovely Old Town. Dinner is on your own this evening.

Day 2

The morning begins with a walking tour of Innsbruck’s Old Town, a wonderfully scenic area of 15th- and 16th-century houses, pause-worthy buildings like the Town Hall and Belfry, and the landmark Goldenes Dachl, which has become a symbol of the city. In time, you will depart for a spectacular day of travel into Germany and the Bavarian Alps to the twin villages of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The streets are lined with typical south German houses with ornately carved balconies. The views are stunning from most anywhere in the village.

Then, in nearby Eibsee, you will travel by rail and cable car to the summit of the Zugspitze, which towers almost 10,000 feet above sea level. Enjoy the magnificent panorama over the Alps and relax, perhaps with a drink at the mountain café, before crossing the border into Austria and descending by cable car to the village of Ehrwald.

One highlight is the visit to Linderhof Palace, perhaps the most interesting of the castles built towards the end of the 19th century by “Mad” King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Afterward, you will travel to the village of Oberammergau, known for its Passion play, woodcarvings and Luftlmalerei, the paintings that decorate many of the walls of the old houses. The return journey takes you over the lovely Fern Pass to the Inn Valley and Innsbruck. Dinner will be provided at a local restaurant.

Day 3

Leaving Salzburg, you will travel into the Leaving Innsbruck , travel along the Inn River Valley to Wattens, the home of Swarovski crystal. Here, you will visit the Kristallwelten, a crystal-themed park, where you will behold works by world-renowned artists and then browse the glittering Swarovski products in the crystal shop.

Next travel to the spectacular Berchtesgaden region for a special visit to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest. Upon arriving, you will continue on by special mountain coach and elevator to the summit of the Kehlsteinhaus, which the Allied Forces named the Eagle’s Nest. It’s an intriguing site with unique examples of historic architecture. If it’s a clear day, you will have a magnificent view of the surrounding Alps and lovely Konigssee lake.

The day ends in Salzburg, one of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe - a city long associated with Mozart and “The Sound of Music”. Here you will check in and enjoy dinner at your hotel before retiring for the evening.

Day 4

This morning take an introductory walking tour at the right bank of the Salzach River, where you will see the grounds of Mirabell Palace and the Mozart Conservatoire before crossing over into Old Town. Here, you will see the 15th-century Altes Rathaus and take in the sites along Getreidgasse, the city’s famed shopping lane. In time, you will pass the Collegiate Church and Franciscan Church as you head toward Residence Square, home to the medieval bishops’ residence. Following a visit to Salzburg Cathedral and 12th-century Benedictine St. Peter’s Abbey, seen frequently in the “Sound of Music,” the tour will end.

Enjoy some free time for lunch and in the afternoon the group departs for Munich. En route enjoy more spectacular views of the Alps before crossing the Austrian border and arriving at your hotel in Munich for the evening. The group enjoys dinner with local specialties in one of the famous restaurants in the city.

POST - VIENNA: CITY OF DREAMS

POST - VIENNA: CITY OF DREAMS

NOTE: This program ends in Vienna therefore departure flights should be booked from the Vienna International Airport (VIE).

Once home to Sigmund Freud, Vienna has been called the "City of Dreams" and is also known as the "City of Music" for its rich musical heritage. During two days exploring this immaculate capital, one of the most liveable cities in the world, you will experience the history and culture of Vienna with the highlight being an inside visit of the magnificent Schonbrunn Palace. Once the focus of court life in Austria, it is now a cultural treasure and one of the country's most popular attractions.

Day 1: Venice - Vienna

This tour begins at Venice's Maritime Station, where you disembark the ship and meet your private guide. Before long, you will begin driving toward Vienna, stopping for lunch in Slovenia's resort town of Bled, an area that was part of Austria-Hungary until its dissolution in 1918.

Upon arriving in Vienna, you will check in to your hotel. The afternoon will be spent at your leisure, allowing you time to settle in and relax.

In the evening, as elegant Vienna lights up and takes on a warm glow, you will embark on a buffet dinner cruise along the famed Danube River. More than any other city, Vienna is inextricably linked with the Danube, as it was here in Austria's capital that Johann Strauss wrote the "Blue Danube Waltz." As you cruise the river's serene waters, you'll hear a wonderful selection of Viennese melodies, enhancing the already enchanting atmosphere.

Following the dinner cruise, you will return to the hotel and spend the night.

Day 2: Vienna

After breakfast, you will enjoy a leisurely, guided driving tour of Vienna. Along the way, you will see a wealth of marquee attractions, many of them on the Ringstrasse, a horseshoe-shaped boulevard that together with the Danube canal encircles the historic district. It's one architectural gem after the other, including the State Opera House, spectacular Museum of Fine Arts, neo-Renaissance Natural History Museum, stately Parliament and City Hall, as well as the Burgtheater, one of the world's most respected German-language theaters.

The highlight may well be the tour inside Schönbrunn Palace, the summer residence of the Hapsburgs, starting in the 18th century. It's everything you might imagine in a Baroque imperial palace. Most of the rooms are decorated in a Rococo style, the staterooms are lavish, and many of the walls feature gold-leaf ornamentation. In 1772, child prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played a concert in the Hall of Mirrors. There is even a zoo, which was created in 1752, making it the world's oldest.

Following your visit, you will pass the Belvedere Palace, the former summer residence of Prince Eugene, which houses the world's largest collection of art work by famed Austrian painter Gustav Klimt.

The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy as you please. Dinner will be at a typical Viennese restaurant serving traditional fare. Afterwards, you will return to the hotel to spend the night.
