Sometimes, the most relaxing way to take in the beauty of the tropics is in air-conditioned comfort, and this leisurely driving tour provides the perfect means.
Depart from the pier and begin a picturesque drive around the island, taking in the sights from the comfort of your motor coach. As you follow an alluring route through the mountainous countryside and along the coast, the natural beauty of Isla de Margarita soon takes hold.
After a brief stop for photos at Isla Bonita, you will pass the inland capital of La Asuncion. It’s a beautiful colonial city with two national parks and a 16th-century cathedral that has the distinction of being the oldest church in Venezuela. The cathedral walls were built to be inordinately thick to protect the church from attacks by marauding pirates.
Later, you will pass star-shaped San Carlos Borromeo, the largest fortress on the island, and the historical coastal city of Pampatar, which was founded in 1535. Here, you will pause for a refreshing drink at the oceanfront Guayoyo Cafe.
Then, for a look at the more modern side of Isla de Margarita, you will drive through business-friendly Porlamar, the largest city on the island, before returning to the pier.
Please note: This tour is mostly panoramic with limited optional walking at the stops. Due to space limitations on the vehicles used, the tour is not available to wheelchair guests. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability. Light-weight clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; a bottle of water from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
