Ideal for nature lovers, this excursion presents the opportunity to kayak through a lagoon in a national park that is home to more than 100 species of indigenous and migratory birds.

Depart from the pier and drive due west to the narrowest part of Isla de Margarita. Upon reaching the Macanao peninsula adjacent to La Restinga National Park, you will attend a brief orientation on kayaking before embarking in one.

As you paddle through the still waters of the salt lagoon, you will delight in the serenity and silence, interrupted only by the sounds of nature and the guide pointing out the wonders. Wildlife abounds in the national park, which was established in 1974 to preserve and protect the island’s most important coastal lagoon, mangrove forests and semi-desert zone.

While you may see some marine life, including starfish, seahorses and oysters on the exposed mangrove roots, birds are the most prevalent species within the lagoon. You may spot pelicans, flamingos, herons and even the rare blue-crowned parakeet, which is also known as the sharp-tailed conure because of the distinctive shape of its tail. The yellow-shouldered parrot is another beautifully colored tropical bird found here.

After approximately two hours kayaking through the unspoiled lagoon, you will return to the kayak camp for refreshments before returning to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes a limited amount of walking with just a few steps to negotiate. Guests must be agile enough to enter and exit the kayak with limited assistance. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Participants should be in good physical condition. A swimsuit worn under a cover-up; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; insect repellant; a bottle of water and towel from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes with a rubber sole that can get wet or aqua socks are recommended. Those who take part in any water activities do so at their own risk and responsibility. Pictures are available for sale from the kayak operator.
