This tour which is both entertaining and informative combines several of Cairns' most popular attractions. You'll begin with a scenic coach ride from the pier to the extraordinary Rainforestation Nature Park. This World Heritage-listed jungle features expansive views and a knowledgeable commentary from your Duck Captain, who will navigate your Army Duck up the jungle along the water's edge. Here, it's not unusual to see water goannas soaking up the sun, a python slithering up a tree, and turtles, fish and eels swimming around the vessel. During your time at Rainforestation, you'll also enjoy a traditional show in the rainforest amphitheater, performed by local Pamagirri dancers who will depict animals, food-gathering and hunting via their music and dance.
The final stop on your tour will be at Kuranda, a delightful village nestled in the heart of the rainforest. Established as a railway station in the mid-1800s when logging and mining were large industries on the Atherton Tablelands, Kuranda became known as a place to stock up on goods and also where one could enjoy culture and sophistication at one of the local hotels. Today, this colorful township is a haven for markets, cafés, and restaurants. After a brief overview of the town, you'll have some free time to further explore on your own. No doubt you'll want to take the opportunity to browse the shops for local artwork, crafts, opals or aboriginal souvenirs.
At the conclusion of your time in Kuranda, your coach will travel back down the mountain, affording you further scenic views of the Cairns region, the Coral Sea and Green Island. Before returning to the pier, a brief panoramic tour of Cairns is provided.
Please note: This tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Guests must be able to negotiate approximately three high steps onto and off the coach and be agile enough to enter and exit the Army Duck. There is a moderate amount of walking, at times over uneven natural surfaces. Comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sun screen and insect repellant are recommended. The order of sights visited may vary and the itinerary may be reversed. This tour does not operate with a separate guide, but rather with a driver/guide.
