Tour a unique museum devoted to cachaça, an iconic Brazilian spirit that is gaining international recognition for its distinctive flavor.
Depart from the pier and make the one hour drive inland to Maranguape, the site of one of the more unusual museums in Brazil. It’s dedicated to cachaça (pronounced ka-SHA-sa), a rum-like Brazilian spirit made from sugar cane instead of dark molasses like most rum.
The museum is part of the Ypioca distillery once owned by the Telles family, who started producing the alcoholic beverage cachaça here in 1846. As you tour the museum, you can trace the history of the Telles family through photos, documents and videos and see pieces of original machinery used to produce cachaça. A rare 19th-century ceramic alembic vessel is on display, as are rows of oak barrels, a manual mill, and a massive brandy tun.
Cachaca, also known as pinga and aquardente, is the main ingredient in Brazil’s refreshing national drink, the caipirinha. The other ingredients are muddled lime and sugar. Incredibly, Brazil produces thousands of varieties of cachaça, which are added to all sorts of cocktails or if it’s ultra-premium sipped straight, without other ingredients to alter the powerful flavor.
During your guided tour, you will have the chance to sample this complex distinctive spirit, which has an almost tequila-like aroma. Afterwards, you will have ample free time to further explore the museum and grounds, as there are also exhibits outside. Later, you will rejoin your coach and drive back to the pier.
