Ride atop an Addo Elephant through one of South Africa’s most biologically diverse areas, and then observe these massive creatures in their natural habitat.
Transfer from the pier to the Port Elizabeth Airport where you will board a light aircraft for the twenty-minute flight to the Addo Elephant Back Safaris landing strip. Located in the pristine valley of the Zuurberg Mountains, the grounds of Addo Elephant Back Safaris borders the recently proclaimed Greater National Park of the same name. This area is regarded as one of the most biologically diverse eco-regions in Southern Africa, encompassing habitats ranging from the semi-arid Karoo to fynbos-covered slopes and impenetrable thickets that extend into rolling grasslands.
Upon arrival at the airstrip, you will be met by an elephant warden and transferred to the reception area. Next, climb aboard one of these African elephants and proceed on a 30-minute extraordinary ride through the bush. As your elephant ambles along, you will enjoy an unprecedented view from your lofty perch.
Either before or after the ride, you will be invited to join in a bushwalk with the elephants. As you walk through the diverse terrain with the elephants by your side, you’ll have the unique opportunity of observing their habits and interactions with each other. These gentle giants are highly intelligent, and may reach out to nudge you with their trunks. Being touched, nudged or gently pushed shows their curiosity and trust. The experience of being so closely involved with these inquisitive, mild-mannered elephants, can give you the feeling of oneness at an emotional and visceral level that is immensely elevating and yet, somehow disquieting. Afterwards, enjoy a light lunch and refreshment while watching the elephants as they frolic at a watering hole and wallow in the mud to protect their skin from the elements.
