Immerse yourself in the various cultures of Sarawak at a village where several tribal groups demonstrate the eccentricities of their traditions through architecture, dance and customs.
Depart from the pier and drive due north to the foothills of Mount Santubong, a half-mile-high peak that can be seen from Kuching on a clear day. Before long, you will arrive at the Sarawak Cultural Village, a “living museum” that was created to preserve and showcase the state’s cultural heritage. Approximately 150 people live here and practice traditional activities such as silk weaving, hat making and wood carving.
Your tour begins in one of the longhouses, which are typically built near waterways with axe-hewn timber and natural materials such as leaves for thatching. Longhouse interiors are always open with verandahs running the length of the buildings.
Sarawak’s primary ethnic groups are represented in the village through replicas of structures that include a Melanau tall house, Malay town house and Chinese farmhouse. Members of the tribes, dressed in traditional costumes, are on hand to explain their culture, and a tribal storyteller may be there to regale you with outlandish legends.
You’ll delve even deeper into the diverse cultures of Sarawak while watching a folkloric performance. Wearing bright costumes and jewelry, the graceful dancers tell elaborate stories through their movements, accompanied by traditional live music.
Following your cultural immersion, you will enjoy free time for shopping at the Kuching waterfront before returning to the pier.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 1/2 hours of easy to moderate walking/standing. There are natural and uneven surfaces to negotiate and the pathways can become slippery when wet. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Participants should be in good physical condition. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; a bottle of water and a towel from the ship; and binoculars are recommended. Flat, closed-toe, comfortable hiking or sport shoes with a non-slip sole are recommended.
