Trek into the rainforest in idyllic Bako National Park for an up-close look at Borneo’s exotic flora and to look for the island’s iconic animals in their natural habitats.
Depart from the pier and enjoy a picturesque drive northeast into the rainforest at the tip of the Muara Tebas peninsula, where Bako National Park is located. Although among the smallest parks in Sarawak, it’s the oldest, so the environment is wonderfully pristine. Few natural areas reveal so much, as almost every type of vegetation in Borneo thrives here.
You will enter the park by boarding a boat in the nearby fishing village of Bako and cruising along the South China Sea to the park’s exhibition center.
Following a brief stop to register, receive a briefing and use the facilities, you will begin your trek along the jungle trails where you will observe the park’s wildlife and learn about the flora. As there are seven different ecosystems within the park, the diversity is remarkable and stunningly exotic. Certain paths wind past carnivorous pitcher plants; others meander through swamp forest.
Animal lovers will be just as enthralled by the park’s wildlife, the star of which is the odd-looking proboscis monkey, which is only found on Borneo. The species is easy to recognize because of its huge pendulous nose, distinct potbelly and reddish-brown fur. The park is also home to hairy-nosed otters, flying lizards, mouse deer and bearded pigs, which are often seen wallowing in mud.
Following your guided walking tour of the park’s trails, you will retrace your route and return to the pier.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of moderate to strenuous walking/hiking. There are natural and uneven surfaces to negotiate and the pathways can become slippery when wet. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Participants should be in good physical condition. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; a towel from the ship; and binoculars are recommended. Flat, closed-toe, comfortable hiking or sport shoes with a non-slip sole are recommended.
