Discover the irresistible Old World charms of Colombo and the more modern side of Sri Lanka's largest city by touring several landmark attractions.
Your tour commences with a drive around this energetic city of more than a million inhabitants. Colombo's passion for the contemporary is evident in the many high-rises towering above the Fort, an area named because of a 19th century British fortress there. The Fort is also known for the Old Parliament, built in the Neo-Baroque style during the British reign. In fact, the British influence is highly evident throughout the city, and many of the streets are named for former British governors.
Your route will take you through the affluent Cinnamon Gardens residential district and past the University of Colombo and prestigious Royal College, before arriving at the esteemed National Museum. The Museum's collection of antiques and objects d'art beautifully expresses the island's cultured side. The more than 4,000 palm leaf manuscripts housed here are of particular interest.
Continuing on, you will enjoy a refreshment break at the luxurious Galle Face Hotel, another landmark from the British colonial period. Afterwards, a short drive brings you to your next stop, Gangaramaya Temple. The largest temple in Colombo, Gangaramaya is also a Buddhist learning center and features a holy bodhi tree at its center.
Following your exploration of the temple, you will re-board your coach and transfer directly back to the pier.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of walking, and there will be some uneven surfaces and steps to negotiate. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have a companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; a hat; sunglasses and flat comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
