On this excursion, visit the famous Cu Chi Tunnels, the vast underground network of tunnels that hid and protected thousands of Vietnamese during the war. Departing the pier, enjoy a scenic drive through the city and into the countryside, catching a glimpse of rural life in today's Vietnam. Travel on bustling roadways congested with pedestrians, bicycles, motorbikes, oxcarts, trucks and buses, past pancake-flat rice fields, rubber plantations, colorful flower markets and small rural villages on the journey to the tunnels. Along the way, observe the process of making fragile rice paper, a booming home-industry in this area. Arriving at Cu Chi, discover the ingenuity and resilience of the Vietnamese people, during an esploration of this fascinating underground complex built by the Viet Cong. Work on the tunnels began in 1948 during the war against the French, and continued throughout the 1960s when they were greatly expanded. The network of tunnels was vast, extending over 120 miles and included storerooms, smokeless kitchens, sleeping quarters, hospitals and schools. Sixteen thousand people lived in the tunnels during the day, at least 20% of them women. The tunnels were 31 inches wide and five feet high, with air holes every 100 feet, camouflaged to look just like natural holes from tree roots or animals. After an extensive tour of the area and the opportunity to enter some of the tunnels, re-board your bus and return to the city.
