Stroll the streets of colonial Williamsburg with a guide who will elaborate on the events that shaped America's history and on everyday life for the colonists and then enjoy ample free time to explore this historic city at your leisure before sampling some fine vintages at the Williamsburg Winery.
From the pier in Norfolk, it's a scenic one hour drive to Williamsburg, the restored capital of the British Colony of Virginia. Today, colonial Williamsburg sprawls over 301 acres and includes more than 500 period buildings, many of them original 18th-century structures. Upon arrival, your local guide will lead you on a ninety minute escorted walking tour of its most historically significant blocks. Along the way, you will learn all sorts of intriguing information about the early government based in Williamsburg, the colonial way of life, and the key figures who lead the American Revolution.
Following your guided tour, you will have approximately two hours of free time to enjoy lunch on your own and browse the many unique specialty shops found in and around Merchants Square. There are more than 40 shops in this historic area, offering everything from designer apparel to exquisite jewelry to handmade quilts.
Rejoining your coach at the appointed time and location, you will next make the short drive to the Williamsburg Winery, a charming 18th century styled winery that is surrounded by over 50 acres of vineyards. While touring the winery's private cellar, you will have the opportunity to sample and compare many of its most acclaimed vintages. One of the most popular is the Gold Medal-winning Governor's White, the first wine produced at the winery after it was established in 1985. Varietals include the Burgesses' Measure Merlot, which is rich in fruit character, and a delicate Claret aged in French and American oak barrels. You may also enjoy a specialty spiced or "mulled" wine that was traditionally served warm during the colonial days.
Following your winery visit, you'll make the return trip back to the pier in Norfolk.
