Enjoy an enlightening tour of a Belize brewery, followed by a tasting of several unusual beers made with locally grown sugar and other ingredients imported from Germany.
Depart from the pier and drive west following the winding Belize River upstream towards the inland town of Ladyville. Along the way, you’ll learn about some of Belize’s colorful history and pass some interesting landmarks. After approximately 35-minutes, you’ll arrive at the Belikin Brewery, which has been producing a variety of distinctive Belize beers for more than four decades.
While touring the fully automated facility, you will watch each step of the brewing process. You will see the malt being milled and mixed with boiling water, the hops being added to the mixture, and the yeast being folded in to begin the fermentation and aging. You will also view the Micro and CTA labs where all the processes are consistently tested and “tasted”. It truly is one place where drinking on the job is encouraged! It’s a fascinating, multi-step process here at the brewery that produces approximately 8,000 cases of beer each day.
Afterwards, in the brewery’s English-style Tap Room Tavern, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a snack and sample some Belikin beers. They include a light golden lager, premium malty ale, and Beliken’s own stout, which features a bold, almost smoky mouth-feel. Belikin also brews Guinness Stout according to the original recipe from Ireland. Even so, the Belikin version tastes different than the Guinness Stout served in the United States and Europe.
Be sure to notice the logo of a Mayan temple on the Belikin beer bottles; it serves to acknowledge the many archaeological ruins surrounding Belize City. Following your tasting, you will re-board your coach and return to the pier.
