The Furnas Lake and Furnas Hot Springs area is one of the richest hydrological areas in Europe, having over 22 thermal springs. This delightful excursion truly gives you a unique, up-close perspective of São Miguel's natural wonders.
Joining your coach at the pier, you will travel across the island to Ribeira Grande. The city has a decidedly Portuguese influence and a short walking tour here showcases the its lovely Baroque architecture that dates back to the XVII and XVIII centuries. From here you will travel to a local tea plantation where you will learn about the history of tea growing on the island and perhaps sample a local blend.
Continuing on, you'll make your way to the Pico do Ferro viewpoint where you can view the largest and oldest volcanic crater on the island, at the bottom of which lays Furnas Lake.
Re-boarding your coach, it's on to the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden. Here, in this typical English garden setting, you'll enjoy a leisurely visit in this paradise of meandering trails that wind past colorful flowers, lush vegetation, sparkling streams and steaming thermal baths.
Before returning to the ship, there will be one final stop at "Caldeiras", an area with several thermal hot springs and fumalores that spout boiling water and are known for their medicinal mud. During a short walk here, you can view some of these spectacular natural phenomena before it's time to re-board your coach and return to the ship.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 90-minutes of moderate walking/standing - at times over cobblestones, gravel and uneven natural surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate comfortable clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Visibilty at the viewpoints is subject to prevailing weather conditons.
