Leaving Tangier behind, you'll travel by coach through fertile countryside and over a narrow pass in the surrounding hills to the neighboring city of Tetouan, thought to be the most Spanish of Moroccan cities with Spanish culture still playing a significant role in the life of the city. Once the capital of the Spanish protectorate in northern Morocco, Tetouan's real foundation began with the settlement of highly skilled Andalusian refugees who arrived just before and after Granada fell in 1492. Andalusian music remains dominant today as well as trade with Ceuta, a neighboring Spanish city. The adjoining beach resort areas are quite popular with Morocco's more affluent residents and have helped make the city a thriving tourist location.
Upon arrival, you'll enjoy a tour of the walled Medina, followed by a walking tour of the colorful old town. As you stroll along the streets and narrow lanes, you'll be able to fully experience the unique architecture that is a harmonious and fascinating blend of Arabic and Spanish styles that truly reflect the town's bicultural ancestry. During your time here you will visit both the Moroccan Arts Museum which houses a varied and notable collection of traditional Moroccan crafts and ethnographic items, as well as a local artisan school. At the school, you will learn the unique technique used by Tetouan artists when making zellij, the hand-cut tiles used for mosaics. Following your visits to these interesting attractions, it's time to re-board your coach and travel back to the pier in Tangier where your tour concludes.
Please note: This tour consists of approximately 2 hours of moderate walking over mostly flat surfaces. Wheelchair guests must have someone who can assist them and it is recommended that those guests with mobility concerns evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Lightweight clothing, a hat and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested.
