À La Carte Excursions | General Information
Add To Plan
This unique family-owned, century-old hacienda belongs to the Ortuño Family, whose wealth comes from ancestral agricultural activities like sugarcane and coffee. Lately, though, they have produced macadamia. The hacienda is located in the hills of Turrialba, a region blessed with exuberant tropical forests in harmony with sugar cane and coffee plantations, macadamia trees and tropical flowers. Upon arrival at the hacienda you will have the opportunity to go back to those days of yore, learning about the ancient methods of cultivation and processing of sugarcane. You will see how the extract of the cane is cooked, poured into molds and converted into a deliciously sweet treat with macadamia nuts. Next, an introduction to coffee cultivation will show you the process from the red coffee berry to the peeled coffee bean covered with the inside parchment to the roasted coffee bean, finally followed by a coffee tasting session. Later, you will visit one of the country's largest and most exotic collections of orchids, continuing to a visit of the macadamia drying and pealing plant. The hacienda is nestled in the mountains of Turrialba and you can't miss the wonderful views of the valley, the magnificent Reventazón River and its impressive dam, and the endless, regal fields dotting the landscape. Lunch will be served in a covered hall surrounded by exotic gardens, and the host flowers colorful hummingbirds feed are just feet from your luncheon area. After lunch, you will visit the picturesque colonial metallic and wood chapel brought by German pilgrims in 1880. You will live in symbols of the old home style of Costa Rica's yesteryears. A shop with the hacienda's products, such as coffee, macadamia in different presentations and flavors, organic sugarcane products, cooking recipes, and other local keepsakes will be available at factory prices.
