Begin this interesting and insightful tour which explores the history of Jewish immigration and life in Uruguay throughout the last century, by first passing by the monument which commemorates the Graf Spee, the famous WWII German warship whose sunken remains rest on the floor of the ocean a short distance outside the harbor. Arriving in the Old City, you'll travel by Golda Meir Square and the Hebraica Maccabi Sports Center, as well as the Sepharadic and Ashkenazi synagogues.

Traveling on, your coach makes its way to the Goes area, where you'll have an opportunity to view the colorful housing projects that were built in the 1920's by real estate developer Emilio Reus, as well as the synagogue. As you travel through this and the Pocitos residential area, viewing the Jewish schools and Holocaust Memorial - the only one of its kind in South America; you'll be afforded a true glimpse into present day Jewish life in Montevideo.

Leaving here, it's back to the Old City where you'll see Independence Square and then enjoy an informative visit at the main Jewish Community Center, as well as have an outside view of the main synagogue. Your last stop is at the truly noteworthy Gurvich Museum. Born in Lithuania in 1927, José Gurvich immigrated to Uruguay in 1933 and was a student of the famous Uruguayan painter, Joaquin Torres Garcia. However, Gurvich retained his own unique style and all of his paintings register elements of the Jewish religion iconography. Following your time at the museum, your coach will return you to the ship.

Please note: Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
