Discover the intriguing history of Florianopolis and how the city has gained international acclaim through its charming blend of historical sites and cosmopolitan culture.
Depart from the pier and settle in for a leisurely drive through Florianopolis, a cosmopolitan city with a passion for having fun and relaxing. Once only a mecca for surfers, Florianopolis now attracts international jetsetters and beach-lovers, as well.
The historical downtown is a major draw, especially the area around the main square, where you will see a revered 100-year-old fig tree and several outstanding colonial buildings. The adjacent History Museum of Santa Catarina, which occupies the former governor’s palace, is especially noteworthy for its exceptionally ornate architecture.
The Public Market, whose first phase was constructed in the late 1890s, stands nearby offering a glimpse into daily life in this vibrant island city. The market’s countless stalls are primarily filled with handicrafts, clothing and exotic locally grown foods.
Continuing on, you will drive past the Victor Meirelles Museum, a national historic site with an impressive collection of the 19th-century artist’s most representative works. You will also hear about the defenses of the Portuguese-built, 18th-century fortress that lies on the outskirts of Florianopolis. Upon reaching one of the city most exquisite beaches, at either Jurere or Lake Conceicao, you will have time for photos and a quick dip in the water before returning to the pier.
