Gain an insider's perspective into Maine's rich history of boat and shipbuilding by touring a more than 125-year-old shipyard and an intriguing maritime museum.

From the pier it's a leisurely drive northeast to the village of Bath, Maine's renowned "City of Ships." Here, you'll have a panoramic tour of the Bath Iron Works, a shipyard founded in 1884 along the Kennebec River. Over the years, the Bath Iron Works has constructed hundreds of private, commercial and military vessels, including yachts, battleships, frigates, cruisers and especially destroyers. The Zumwalt-class destroyers currently being built are the world's most technologically advanced warships. Driving through the massive shipyard, you'll discover the long and fascinating history of shipbuilding in Bath and the great pride taken by the workers, which gave rise to the well-known saying "Bath-built is best-built."

You'll next make your way to the nearby Maritime Museum where you'll learn even more about Bath's integral role in a variety of marine activities. The museum is located on a 20-acre campus and a docent-led tour brings the rich 400-year tradition of Maine shipbuilding to life. Enjoy exploring the Percy & Small Shipyard, the last shipyard of its kind in the country and where the world's largest wooden ship was built. You'll also observe Victorian life in the Donnell House which is decorated with period furnishings. In the boathouse, watch volunteers demonstrate traditional boatbuilding skills.

After exploring the museum, you'll be afforded over 90-minutes of free time in downtown Bath, where you may dine on your own or shop for merchandise such as antiques, jewelry and artwork before rejoining your coach and traveling back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of easy to moderate walking, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. There will be a few steps and some gravel surfaces to negotiate. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Before being permitted to enter the Bath Iron Works, all guests must print and sign their name as well as supply their nationality on a sign-in sheet. There is no photography of any kind permitted inside the Bath Iron Works. This tour does not operate on Sundays.
