This tour provides a lovely glimpse of the beautiful city of Funchal and some of its notable sights. Departing the pier by coach, you will first travel to Santa Catarina Park. Covering nearly 9 acres, this tranquil park is home to vast lawns, pathways flanked with numerous species of plants and flowers and a sparkling lake where swans and ducks thrive. The Park also offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Bay of Funchal. After a brief visit, you'll continue on to the cable car station where you will board a cable car that will transport you to the picturesque mountain village of Monte. Perched on a hillside some 1,650 feet above the sea, this charming location was once a favorite holiday resort for the aristocracy. Nestled in a picture-postcard setting of cobbled pathways lined with colorful flowers, trees and small streams, it's easy to see why Monte became such a popular place to come for relaxation. A visit to the Our Lady of Monte Church where the exiled Emperor of Austria, Charles I is buried is included during your time here.
Traveling on, your next stop is at the lush Botanical Garden where you will be able to take in the vast variety of flowers and plants that are represented here as well as enjoy a spectacular view of the Bay of Funchal. Re-boarding your coach, your tour makes its way back to the city center for your final stop at Oliveira's, an embroidery factory that produces some of Madeira's famous hand-stitched embroidery. While here, you will be able to observe how this authentic embroidery is designed, printed and then carefully stitched by hand. There is a souvenir shop located on the premises and you will also have an opportunity to sample some famous honey cake and Madeira wine before it's time to return to the pier.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 1/2 hours of walking. It is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. There are stairs to negotiate at the Church and at the embroidery factory. A windbreaker or light jacket and comfortable, flat walking shoes are strongly recommended.
