Having the advantage of being located at the head of the Morbihan Gulf, Vannes is considered by many to be the premier tourist town in southern Brittany.
From the pier in Lorient, it's just over an hour's drive to reach this historic and intriguing city that was built in the shape of an amphitheater. While modern Vannes is a sprawling community, at its center is the surprising small, old-walled city. Enclosed within the well-preserved ramparts, you will find a web of mostly pedestrian streets that wind their way around the Cathedral and along a tiny stream. You will also find colorful gardens and elegant shops housed in what were once old-town mansions.
Upon arrival, you will commence a guided walking tour that visits the old-quarter and the ramparts, which give a good view over the curiously roofed medieval homes. You will also see La Cohue, a market place that dates from the 12th and 14th centuries, the 13th century St. Peter's Cathedral with its flamboyant Gothic style, and the 16th century gabled houses that line Place Henry IV.
Before re-boarding the coach for the drive back to Lorient, you will have free time at your leisure to further explore on your own or browse in the shops.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 1/4 hours of moderate walking, much of it over cobblestone and uneven surfaces. There are also a few steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing; flat, comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses are recommended. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary. In the event of religious ceremonies taking place, interior visits to any cathedrals will not be possible.
