Cádiz became very wealthy under Roman rule, but achieved its greatest fame during the era of the Catholic kings. With the discovery of the "New World," the city became the headquarters for Spain's exploration fleet and treasure ships. The resulting trade with the Americas made it the richest port in Western Europe. The old city stands proudly on a tiny promontory, protected by stout 13th-century fortress walls. Palm trees, gracious squares, flower-filled parks, ubiquitous red-tile roofed buildings, and bustling street markets make Cádiz a most delightful port. After driving around the old town, you will proceed on foot through the Barrio del Populo, past medieval bastions and marvelously restored buildings to Cathedral Square where you can view the exterior of the 18th-century church that is located here. Following some free time, continue to the Fine Arts and Archaeological Museum for a guided visit of its treasures.

Please note: Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, as this tour includes approximately 2 1/2 hours of walking at times over uneven or cobblestone surfaces and approximately 20 steps to negotiate. This tour is not suitable for wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns.

The Fine Arts and Archeological Museum is closed on Mondays, and will be replaced with a visit to "La Santa Cueva".
